Love this song...and the flip of the old 45rpm....got to play both of them back in the '70's when they were popular...and I worked in country radio.

Guess you're possibly right mate. As you say, some of these oldies are complex. Probably been buggered around with and wording changed over the years.

He's being taken away from this world, leaving her here,on this earth, alone. I think we're accustomed to hearing complex lyrics and narratives, and these old tunes were very simple, just one or two thoughts, not entire stories.

i heard brenda lee sing this one under the title of "some one to love me " believe me it is the best version of the way this should be sung my opinion only but it gives me goosebumps listening

Probably the best version I've heard. The words have been changed around a little, but at least it explains that he is going to be hanged tomorrow and not "carried to a new jail tomorrow." I could never work out what his "darling" was doing in the same jail as him, if he was being taken away, leaving her behind. Maybe I'm looking too hard for something that can't be explained. Oh well.....

@LP61RI I bought it on vinyl. Funny thing was, Sonny James had apparently autographed it. Found it in a box full of records for 20 bucks. Great find!
