What a horrible event to have to commemorate. This song is a great tribute though. Good job.

The South or it's soldiers didn't cause the explosion. You can blame this on the boat operators for a faulty boiler repair in Vicksburg instead of replacing the boiler. The boat was 5x overloaded with soldiers after the "War for Southern Independence" because of greed of the crew and Captain.

Well how about you write one, Bilbo? Seriously...if you don't appreciate this, I feel sorry for you. This is the kind of song that Woody Guthrie would've been proud of. Sometimes you don't need a kajillion chord changes, man. If you want that from Jay, go listen to Uncle Tupelo.

To biblobaggins417 History records the fact that these were all released prisoners. There was no bomb or sabotage. The conspiracy charge just isn't here. As a licensed boiler operator for over 30 years, a boiler steam explosion is way beyond TNT or Nitro. Just do some research. From the license test: Which is worse, a gas or steam explosion? Answer: STEAM Sultana was a victim of a desperate captain and owner. Officers $10 Enlisted $5 plus freight and you'ld love the real story.

It's crazy, but I think this is the one song on American Central Dust that could've been on any of the first three Son Volt albums, particularly Drown.

@redspotincd14 In fact, it's a stunning song. As a brazilian, I admire and appreciate the southern culture and think it is unfairly underrated as well. :)
