The lyrics open with the image of a child sleeping "in the glow of Donald Duck light", a reference to Waters' prior song "The Tide Is Turning." Waters goes on to ask why a culture whose primary concerns are luxury, consumption and petty values would "kill the child," no doubt in reference to his view on how war is orchestrated in order to satisfy mass production and paranoia, regardless of who is killed. The song ends with a plea to protect children from the crusade-waging "bigots and bully boys / Slugging it out in the yard."

==== Lyrics ====

The child lay

In the starlit night

Safe in the glow of his Donald Duck light

How strange to choose to take a life

How strange to choose to kill a child

Hoover, Blaupunkt, Nissan Jeep

Nike, Addidas, Lacoste and cheaper brands

Cadillac, Amtrak, gasoline, diesel

Our standard of living, could this be a reason

That we would choose to kill the child

That we would choose to kill the child

Allah, Jehovah, Buddah, Christ

Confucius and Kali and reds, beans and rice

Goujons of sole, ris de veau, ham hocks

Lox bagels and bones and commandments in stone

The Bible, Koran, Shinto, Islam

Prosciutto, risotto, falafel and ham

Is it dogma, doughnuts, ridicule faith

Fear of the dark, or shame or disgrace

That we would choose to kill the child

That we would choose to kill the child

It's cold in the desert

And the space is too big

The rope is too short

And the walls are too thick

I will show you no weakness

I will mock you in song

Berate and deride you

Belittle and chide you

Beat you with sticks

And bulldoze your home

You can watch my triumphant procession to Rome

Best seat in the house

Up there on the cross

Is it anger or envy, profit or loss

That we would choose to kill the child

That we would choose to kill the child

Take this child and hold him closely

Keep him safe from the holy reign of terror

Take this child hold him closely

Take this child to the moral high ground

Where he can look down on the bigots and bully boys

Slugging it out in the yard

i have never heard of this music artist before. i absolutely love him and his music. i was a big fan of pink floyd, but did not associate roger to PF. thank you roger, we need to hear about the coldness of the world so maybe we can learn to be a more compassionate race, the human race.

While I think most will agree it may not measure up to the very finest of the Pink Floyd, its unlikeness to the 'Floyd "sound" (as if there ever were such a thing...), doesn't inherently mean it's worse. Naturally, feel free and most welcome to think what you will beyond its dissimilarity however!

wow! thank you for sharing, brilliant intro and lyrics...how sad that humans need to be reminded about how stupid and senseless is to be at war.

@ samatoha The rythm git effect is a bit like money and have a cigar. Roger wrote all the PF songs, and lyrics and conceptulized the albums. But he in no way resonible for that momentary lapse of reason crap. I don't think your conparing Roger to Roger. Not RW to PF

Just sad how bad this song is. Could you compare it to anything Floyds did during thier career !?!?! Even though Gilomour Wright and Mason didnt do anything interesting after 1980 all they did was better than this. nothig but pretentious words and lame composing ........ Long live Pink Floyd
