This is one of Roger's "truthtelling" songs. Unlike his humorous parodies, this song speaks to a life situation that must've resembled the actual plight of many of his listeners in the countryside, sidelined by economic hardship & the inability to rise. And it also potentially speaks to many of us in our lives today, as surely as it was deeply personal for Mr. Miller. A miniature masterpiece.

Roger Miller wrote a lot of good songs, but this wasn't one of them...until Merle Haggard "tweeked" it for him. Amazing what a difference changing a word or two can make.
