I see one or two people on here are having a pop at the 'Monster' album. Why? For me it was the album that put them back on the road to credibility. Easily their ballsiest album, REM did the unthinkable at the time, switching instantly from the tried and tested melodic songs of OOT and AFTP, to the hard rock wah wah peddles and eardrum bursting guitar feedback of Monster. The thing is, it was slated by all at the time of release and now, 20 years on, it is now lauded by most rock journalists as an iconic album. Then again, what else would you expect from mad geniuses like Stipe & Co?

Used to love these guys. Then, Monster happened. In addition, Stipe had to open up his big leftist mouth (on stage, of all places after I paid $145 a ticket to see them). Hasn't been the same since.
