In 1978, Stiff Records had many of their acts record this song. An EP of the different versions was the result. Besides Rachel, it was sung by Lene Lovich, Mickey Jupp, Wreckless Eric, Jona Lewie and the Be Stiff Ensemble. Toni Basil also recorded the song in 1982. It became a theme song for the label. Rachel chose to perform it in a rocking country style. Written by Devo, and originally released by them as a single in 1977 (although they had performed it earlier).

This is the only released track by Rachel Sweet and The Records, recorded on the Stiff mobile truck in Northern Ireland in November 1978. Rachel wrote the song with Huw Gower.

@JohnnyLovely2 Oh yes, her first recordings were country (and very obscure), and she had a few country songs on her first and second albums. I love her country records.

It's an acquired taste, this version. I like to line up this song in what I call "Three women – one song: Rachel Sweet, Lena Lovich, and Toni Basil" -- in that order -- followed by the full-on, live 1980 Spudboy version. Suddenly it all makes sense, or, it's more palatable.

DEVO's Gerald Casale must get paid alot off this song...He co-wrote it with Bob Lewis for the now De-funked "Stiff Records" as a Staple all artist, along under the label recorded the song.. including DEVO, Mickey Jupp, Wreckless Erick, Jona Lewie and Lene Lovich along with Rachael Sweet.

The chorus is from the DEVO-song of the same name .. but .. the rest of it ? Bizarre, but cool.

If I'm not mistaken, this the remixed/remastered version--with the "1,2,3..." count chopped off the beginning. I often wonder just how many men and boys (and lesbians) Rachel has made 'stiff' over the years....
