Her voice is, of course, amazing, but this was actually the album that got me really into her and compelled me to go back and listen to some of her older stuff which hadn't resonated with me as much. The lyrics for White Chalk are like nothing else in the world--so perfect, so understated and elegant, original, haunting, and profoundly intelligent--there really is something of a Thomas Hardy novel feel to the whole thing and, much as I also love her work after, this is my favorite of hers.

Quite good, considering she just learned how to play the piano for this album.

I fell in love with this album instantly. Dark, powerful, heartfelt, true, hurt, etc.. While i was way into her previous releases, to me, this album was the one that took a whole lifetime of living to write

a woman with a voice that just goes up and down the scale of it all, every style she can do it! but she also does it all with originality and grace ;)

@jherms74 2 years after you posted this but I couldn't agree more. For much the same reasons as you described, I never got into White Chalk when it was released, despite multiple listenings, and it was only recently, during a live webcast of her performance from the Albert Hall, that I realised how amazing these songs were. Her performance of "The Devil" and "Silence" quite literally brought tears to my eyes. She is simply amazing.

I knew PJ before, but the "stronger" older songs. I liked them but i wasnt such a big fan. These softer, darker songs of her though, I love them. I didn't have to digest them, i loved them immediately. Its awesome how she transforms and never repeats herself

I hate how the cactus makes it look like she is giving the finger in certain parts of the clip.

Polly is an amazing talent. I hope she'll continue making her beautiful music for a long, long time. I have deep respect for her.
