It's Pete Seeger. I believe this is based off of Nearer My God to Thee, correct me if I'm wrong, pretty sure it's where it came from. Folk music has a tendency to build off of other songs, which is why sometimes something may sound familiar. Folk has a purpose, whether to tell a story or persuade. Simplicity is key. Just because it's a folk song, doesn't make it strange for it to have been written in the past 50some years.Trad. is folk but not all folk is trad.

I don't know Pete Seeger very well even though I met him once. My American girlfriend a quarter red Indian chose to play this song on the record player and i doubt she was into Pete Seeger
