This is the remix version featured on the Pat Benatar compilation BEST SHOTS. It is arguably better than the original version featured on the 1979 album IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT. There is also speculation that this remix was in fact the original version, but at the last minute, they swapped it for the version that became the single we all know. I personally prefer this remix. What about you?

I don't think that speculation is true. The sound is too modern for '79. It features synthesizer & keyboard sounds from either a Roland or Yamaha DX7 - which weren't available in '79. Plus the original version is more in sync sound wise with the rest of the "In The Heat Of The Night" LP. The "remix" is far more reminiscent of the mid 80's.

centuryrox, I posted the original mix of the song, which was replaced by the guitar heavy version on copies of the In the Heat of the Night album pretty quickly. That might be the mix you heard. It won't let me post the link in the comments, so just search "Pat Benatar We Live 4 Love original LP mix" and my post should be at the top of the results.

There have been many Benatar compilations. The best sounding one is GREATEST. Best Shots is my fav but needs to be remastered.

I knew I had heard a "disco" version of this song on the radio when it first came out in 1980! I can't seem to find that version anywhere though. Do you know if it's available?

Actually the originbal version of this song was more of a disco song. Pat and Neil didn't care for it so it was replaced by the more rock version. THIS remix was done in 1985 as a more New Wave mix.

Anyone know what instrument (type of synthesizer) is playing in background, most isolated at 1:39 - 1:40 of the song. I read that Pat overdubbed dozens of "aahhs" on top of that, but that sound is the most haunting element of the song.

Nope, I like the rockin' version much better. Don't get me wrong, this version would have been great on the Tron Soundtrack or fits in with a Human League or Flock of Seagulls format. I just like the other one better.

That Best Shots CD cover is my wallpaper on my computer at work, lol. I have a DJ Copy from Japan of this song and Heartbreaker but not a stereo to play it on, lol. The original WLFL had a more disco kind of sound so when I listen I want to covert to mp3. Pat actually signed the album for me, lol. She told Neil, "look, your girlfriend"; she's in that unitard on the cover. I have the turntable just need the rest of the stereo, lol!
