"Paradise" is one of the three songs John Prine first performed on stage- the others being "Sam Stone" and "Hello In There." He still plays all of these songs in his concerts today, almost forty years later.

Muhlenburg County, in western Kentucky, was once one of North America's largest coal-producing regions. The Peabody Coal Company, now called Peabody Energy, is to this day one of the world's largest coal companies.

The town of Paradise; in Muhlenburg County, was flooded by the waters of the Green River in 1969 when a dam was erected, in order to facilitate barge traffic to and from the Peabody coal fields.

This clip is from the outstanding "JOHN PRINE LIVE ON SOUNDSTAGE 1980" DVD, released in March, 2007.

I admit I was a huge Steven Seagal fan as a kid, and he DOES have great taste in music.  I heard this beautiful song in Fire Down Below when I was like 15, and quickly learned to play it.  D, G, A.  The rest is all heart   :)

JOHN PRINEparadiseWhen I was a child my family would travelDown to Western Kentucky where my parents were bornAnd there's a backwards old town that's often rememberedSo many times that my memories are worn. And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg CountyDown by the Green River where Paradise layWell, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in askingMister Peabody's coal train has hauled it awayWell, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green RiverTo the abandoned old prison down by Airdrie HillWhere the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistolsBut empty pop bottles was all we would kill. And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg CountyDown by the Green River where Paradise layWell, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in askingMister Peabody's coal train has hauled it awayThen the coal company came with the world's largest shovelAnd they tortured the timber and stripped all the landWell, they dug for their coal till the land was forsakenThen they wrote it all down as the progress of man.And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg CountyDown by the Green River where Paradise layWell, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in askingMister Peabody's coal train has hauled it awayWhen I die let my ashes float down the Green RiverLet my soul roll on up to the Rochester damI'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'Just five miles away from wherever I am.And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg CountyDown by the Green River where Paradise layWell, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in askingMister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

John Prine ROCKS. His music touches all and even at 70+ years he is still the greatest folk country singer there ever was and is.

Wasn't sure what this song was until they started singing - love it! John Denver played this on a few of his albums, or at least one of them, I believe :)
