"Wagon Wheel" Lyrics:

Headed down south to the land of the pines

And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline

Starin' up the road

Pray to God I see headlights

I made it down the coast in seventeen hours

Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers

And I'm a-hopin' for Raleigh

I can see my baby tonight

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel

Rock me, mama, any way you feel

Hey, mama rock me

Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain

Rock me, mama, like a south-bound train

Hey, mama rock me

Runnin' from the cold up in New England

I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time string band

My baby plays the guitar

I pick a banjo now

Oh, the North country winters keep a-gettin' me now

Lost my money playin' poker so I had to up and leave

But I ain't a-turnin' back

To livin' that old life no more

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel

Rock me, mama, any way you feel

Hey, mama rock me

Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain

Rock me, mama, like a south-bound train

Hey, mama rock me

Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke

I caught a trucker out of Philly

Had a nice long toke

But he's a-headed west from the Cumberland Gap

To Johnson City, Tennessee

And I got to get a move on before the sun

I hear my baby callin' my name

And I know that she's the only one

And if I die in Raleigh

At least I will die free

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel

Rock me, mama, any way you feel

Hey, mama rock me

Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain

Rock me, mama, like a south-bound train

I'm not sure if any of you people realize this, but yes while it is country, the correct term is Mountain music.

They had to condemn themselves to play this song at every single concert. I imagine they're sick of it by now, especially when they have songs like Doc's Day and Brushy Mountain Conjugal Trailer now.

there is always the obvious guy who says, "he didn't sing that first, so and so did" or "so and so did it better" but that's just silly because LOTS of songs get covered OVER and OVER again. But this one isn't originally by Old Crow, Or Darius Rucker, or Mumford and Sons, Or Dylan, there was a guy a man I never got to know that well, but the one time I did meet him, he was singing this song, it was the first time I met him, and heard this song. This song also happened to be his favorite song. He died shortly after graduating high school,He had several friends and a very loving family. I won't pretend I knew him very well, because I didn't, I just know he was a talented musician, but it's strange that in my local area, almost everyone hears the song and enjoys a somber, yet joyful, calm. People don't sing it nonchalantly like a wonderwall cover on the streets. It has respect. And in that way this man played it first, not in the timeline of history, but first in the hearts, of his friends and in my case, short lived acquaintances. So my message to the internet is, stop bickering over who discovered what obscure artist first, because some art is not easy to capture. Some music will never be recorded, some paintings, never finished, and some books never read. so why bother over who experienced what piece of art first let us just be glad we even had the chance to experience it in the first place..
