From 1964, one of my favorite O'Jays tunes. William Powell is lead on this Imperial track done in LA. These guys started in '60 as the Mascots, but were soon Cleveland favorites under the mentorship of DJ Eddie O'Jay, thus the name. This record followed their first hit 'Lonely Drifter', and is typical of the style they had in the mid sixties. Enjoy one of Pookie's hidden gems.

Arthur Velasquez

My name is Arthur Velasquez from Soledad Ca. I used to drive to LA or Oakland just to buy the 45s I really like. In 1965 went to Oakland just to get "oh how you hurt me", by The O'Jays. The best song I'd heard since then. "Oh how you hurt me" tops any of the Temptations songs. At that time, ,,,, What a time to be alive, I went overseas and left all my 45s with my girlfriend. We still have the 45. Thank you for that beautiful song O'Jays. Arthur Velasquez, San Jose Ca

Mr Powell's voice was fantastic but in my opinion they did right changing the lead because of many groups then who sung in falsetto otherwise I would not have recognized an o'jays song if it was played. Walter and Eddie sing in their natural incomparable voice. I love Mr Powell and respect his voice.

Listen to that harmony! There's nothing like 50's and 60's harmony.

Dean, I'd say there is an excellent chance that Bill is alive and kicking, and still working in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in So Cal. It would be a huge coincidence for someone else to have the same name and be employed in the same line of work in the same L.A. area.

Question is Mr. Bill Isles still alive?? He was one of the Originals core members! I know Mr. Bobby Masseny is alive! I seen him on the Unsung O-Jays Show!

In the 70's I worked for Bill at a company in L.A. that manufactured private label pharmaceuticals and nutritional supplements for companies like GNC, Shaklee, etc. There is a Bill Isles on LinkedIn who is a manager at a similar company in Southern California, and it would not surprise me if that is him. He was a really nice guy, and I enjoyed talking to him and listening to some of his stories about the early days of his group.

@Twinkles5927 Yeah. It only took , what ? 26 years for them to finally get the Miracles inducted ? That's just wrong. Now , Marv Tarplin and Ronnie White are DEAD, and Bobby Rogers is sick. That leaves only 3 Miracles left to accept the induction.SMOKEY, CLAUDETTE, and PETE. Also, Hank Ballard's group, THE MIDNIGHTERS are getting inducted. Only two of them are left. James Brown, Bobby Byrd, and Lloyd Stallworth are dead. Only Johnny Terry and Bobby Bennett are left of the Flames.

@williamg2552 Hey guys, the wrong has finaly been righted! The Miracles, along with James Brown's famous Flames, and other groups where only the lead singer was recognized were finally inducted this year, 2012 , to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame here in Cleveland! I agree, it's high time!

@tempts2000 No, Smokey went in alone, the other Miracles are NOT inducted. They should have been, but sadly, they're not. Check "THE MIRACLES" in Wikipedia.
