Didn't something happen to Bill Golden's face that cause him to grow the beard.... an accident maybe? I know I saw him in the early 60s and he had a beautiful flawless olive skin.... very handsome.

Mr. Golden talked them into getting rid of Jim Hammill, and then he took his pace, and then he talked them into getting into country music because their was not much of an outlet for Gospel Music for the six other days of the week, Gospel Music was something that was reserved for Sunday, and he believed their was 6 other days you had to live for to pay the bills. I knew a preacher that knew Joe Bonsall and he said he was serious about the lord, why did they ever haft to full around with country music? A lot of mixed feelings about it the direction they took over the years. Mr. Golden got them to step away from Heart Warming Records that promoted Gospel Concerts and sign with Columbia, that never did promote much on Gospel Concerts. I wished Mr. Golden never left them in 1987, that hurt their popularity in country music. And on his return, the same popularity never returned, though they are still well thought of and their legacy of music.

@adkinsda @cebarry2000 You both are correct. This is, by succession, the earlier Oaks, which stood from 1964, when Bill Golden replaced Jim Hammill, until 1966, when Duane Allen replaced Smitty Gatlin. Gatlin died several years later; Herman Harper, who was replaced by "Noel" Fox, left to take over their booking in 1967 and appeared occasionally with the group until his death in 1993. Willie Wynn was replaced by Joe Bonsall in 1973. Wynn still joins the Oaks onstage every now and then.

@dutchiev326 I'm not disagreeing with you. My point was that there is a continuum that started with the Georgia Clodhoppers to Oak Ridge Quartet to Oak Ridge Boys.

@adkinsda actually the group called the oakridge boys started many years ago.The Oak Ridge Boys is a country and gospel group that is based in the United States. The men singing now were not the orignal group as it started in the 1940's and these guys are not that old. Willie Fowler Lon "Deacon" Freeman, Curly Kinsey, and Johnny New were the original group.

@cebarry2000 My answer to jsstephenson was - yes this is the same group, i.e., Oak Ridge Boys, previously known as the Oak Ridge Quartet that was derived from Wally Fowler's group - the Georgia Clodhoppers. I also stated that the only member on this video that was part of the group that recorded Elvira was William Lee Golden. Sorry for the confusion on the way the answer was stated.

@adkinsda Nope. These are the earlier Oak's: "Little" Willie Wynn, William Lee Golden, Smitty Gatlin, Herman Harper and Tommy Fairchild. The lineup that did Elvira is the current line up of Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen, William Lee Golden (the same as in the clip), and Richard Sterban. This has been the current line up since Joe joined the group in 1973. William Lee Golden joined in 1965, Duane Allen in 1966, Richard Sterban in 1972, and Joe in 1973.
