About each time I hear Dame Scwarzkopf's voice, I am thrilled with love for its music. Her performances are still studied to learn good phrasing, especially in German. I have wondered how her Italian sounds to Italian ears, I mean its phrasing.

this rendition is very much of it's prewar style. It's perfectly controlled tone flow, distribution of weight in the melody , accents etc are well executed by ES's voice. The style of just giving enough to the text and not overdoing the piece of this young girl pleading for permission to marry from the opera Gianni Schicchi is certainly essential in a live performance if to be at all believable. In recital and recordings of the aria alone we have all become used to the full lyric plush version or perhaps a soubrette chirpy version . This version is how it would have sounded in 1922 before everything became over the top or reductive. It is very touching and utterly convinces. Astonishing technique rarely employed by artists of today.
