It makes sense that this was produced by Pete Anderson, he use to be Dwight Yoakam's lead guitarist and producer. There is so much Dwight Yoakam in the arrangement of this song. In fact, that has to be Pete Anderson playing that guitar. does anybody know?

I grew up knowing this song by the legend Johnny Cash, didn't know it by Kris, I guess he always seemed to me to be a great actor, never new him as a singer, just in the last few years I heard this version by Mark Chesnutt and find that as a musician and singer this is how this song should have been done, this is hands down the best version I've ever heard, great job Mark!!!!

Plaintive and heartfelt version. I'm not sure "better than so and so" or "best" is appropriate. The bottom line is, it's a brilliant song - lyrics and tune. Versions will appeal to people more or less because of context, ie. what they were going through or where they were emotionally when the heard it. As well their connection with the artist.
