First time I heard this song I was about 14 years old. I went to Sam Goody and bought the soundtrack a couple days after 9/11. Besides Never Too Far, should have been a hit.

This is such an great, criminally underrated track from a great, criminally underrated and overlooked album. Not only was "Glitter" the final time Mariah really challenged herself during a project, I stand by the belief that she was the victim of horrible timing and being about 4 years ahead of the music cycle. It's one thing to sprinkle your songs with 80s samples but a song like her remake of "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" was another thing entirely. At the time. The funny thing is I seriously think that if this album had come out in 2005, and the 80s-flavored songs were released as singles, it would have BLOWN UP. It's her voice's last stand It IS one of her best albums It IS her most underrated ...Its only sin was being the soundtrack to a terrible movie. Like someone else said, many other movie/soundtrack vanity projects by other artists resulted in the music being able to rise above the film. "Glitter" is an unfortunate exception. The only songs that are even seeing the word filler are "Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica)" and "If We", not because they're bad songs but rather because they barely contain Mariah herself at all (it's supposed to be MC featuring the rappers, not the other way around). However, both songs have strong input from Mariah and good hooks, fit nicely into the project, and had single potential. While "Loverboy" doesn't necessarily fit the definition of filler (and despite being one of my fave MC tracks) it's easily the weakest link. However, I DO forgive her for it because it was a rushed job anyway. She finally perfected the ballad with the gorgeous "Never Too Far" along with "Lead The Way" and "Twister". Neither are overdone, marred with annoying production or sacrifice a good melody for screaming. She has yet to top either of them since (though "Circles" and "I Wish You Knew" were good tries). "Reflections (Care Enough)" is still good but it doesn't manage to excite me like the others (more specifically "Never Too Far") do. The 80s cuts - "Want You", "All My Life", "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" (she'll sadly never do anything that sounds like it or looks like the great video that goes with it again) and "Didn't Mean To Turn You On" are all wonderful. They just work, and are evidence of the one time in her entire career she noticeably stepped outside of her comfort zone. Remember, it was the early 2000s, we had just left the late 90s and music was still stuck on teen-bubblegum-pop and hip-hop, and I gotta respect her releasing "Glitter" when most people weren't even ready for it. It's the only album of hers I can listen through all the way through too. "Butterfly" is sentimental to me (It includes "The Roof" and "Breakdown" which are, hands down some of MC's best tracks; and listening to it takes me back to my childhood and down late 90s Memory Lane) and I do admit that I openly praise it more than "Glitter" but if I had to pick one of the two, I'd pick "Glitter" anytime. Some people would say "Chambracelet" is the most underrated album but the word implies that if more people heard it, it would be thought of more highly... The clincher there is that the album is in actuality horrible and there are, at most, 3 songs that I would ever pull it out for (of the top, "Make it Through the Rain", "I Need You (Boy)" and "Subtle Invitation"). I've tried and tried but that album contains both Mariah's weakest vocals and the most boring, monotonous songs of her entire career. If anything, it would probably get a WORSE rap if more people heard it. As a MC fan I hope the world (and specially MC herself) will one day acknowledge the hidden gem that is this album. One can only pray for MC to randomly belt out "Never Too Far", "Loverboy" or "Reflections" during her next tour.

Here's the deal.....the sheer Beauty & Majesty of Mariah's vocals on this tune are NOT the most amazing aspect of this beautiful creation. The fact that this song was included in a soundtrack to an absolutely horrible movie....."GLITTER".....prevented the public from listening OBJECTIVELY to the great music that was a part of that movie. People ASSUME.......bad movie....bad music. The general public truly missed the boat on this soundtrack.....fear of wasting money on bad product. "Lead The Way" should be considered one of Mariah's CLASSIC creations.

That would make sense, I felt awful for her during the breakdown. She was working wayyyy too much.

The "Glitter" album is definitely one of my favourites from her. One of her funkiest, and most fun records she recorded. I think the unfortunate events of 9/11 and her breakdown didn't help with the reception of the album.
