Many Rivers To Cross was released the album, Pussy Cats, from the summer of 1974. It was the tenth album by Harry Nilsson. I've always been a huge fan of this song, of course it was written and originally performed by Jimmy Cliff, and while I'm a huge fan of Jimmy Cliff's version, I can never decide if my favorite version is Harry & John's or UB40's. Actually I started the video for the UB40 version almost 2 years ago, but when I went back in to try and finish it up, I plugged in this track to to see how it would feel and the video seemed to work better....so here it is. I'll probably go ahead and mix the video up a bit for the UB40 version since I do love it so much.

It was produced by John Lennon during his "Lost Weekend" period. The album title was inspired by the bad press Nilsson and Lennon were getting at the time for being drunk and rowdy in Los Angeles. They also included an inside joke on the cover—children's letter blocks "D" and "S" on either side of a rug − to spell out "drugs" in code.

The album was started in Los Angeles, but Lennon ultimately finished producing it in New York, where he could better control the sessions. During the recording sessions, Nilsson ruptured one of his vocal cords but chose to keep this from Lennon. He forced himself to push through the sessions, causing even more damage.

Among the many musicians on Pussy Cats are drummers Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and Jim Keltner, who actually all play together (on three drumkits) on the closing track, "Rock Around the Clock". Other contributors include Jesse Ed Davis, Klaus Voormann and Bobby Keys.

On the first night of recording, March 28, Paul McCartney popped into the studio unexpectedly. Bootleg recordings from this session were later released as the album A Toot and a Snore in '74.

A quadrophonic version was released on record and 8-track tape. The songs were treated to special mixes for this issue of the album.

Thanks for watching!

Many Rivers To Cross

But I Can't Seem To Find My Way Over

Wandering I'm Lost

As I Travel Along The White Cliffs Of Dover

Many Rivers To Cross

And It's Only My Will That Keeps Me Alive

I've Been Ripped, Washed Up For Years

And I Merely Survive Because Of My Pride

And This Loneliness Won't Leave Me Alone

It's Such A Drag To Be On Your Own

My Women Left Me But She Wouldn't Say Why

Guess I'll Just Break Right Down And Cry

Many Rivers To Cross

But Just Where To Begin

I'm Playing For Time

There've Been Times I Find Myself

Thinking Of Committing Some Terrible Crime

Still This Loneliness Won't Leave Me Alone

It's Such A Drag To Be On Your Own

My Girl Left Me But She Wouldn't Say Why

Guess I'll Just Break Right Down And Cry

Many Rivers To Cross

But I Can't Seem To Find My Way Over

Wandering I Am Lost

As I Travel Along The White Cliffs Of Dover

Many Rivers To Cross

And It's Only My Will That Keeps Me Alive

I've Been Ripped, Washed Up For Years

And I Merely Survive Because Of My Pride

I think he does a fantastic job on this song. Only those of us who know his earlier recordings compare.

I feel like screaming to Harry, "stop straining so much baby!" He really gave it his ALL in this rendition. Extremely impressive. I think they were going for it with this track. Damn, just wow.

That was awesome. Talk about shredding your vocal chords. And as always, thanks for another introduction, and tremendous video. Apparently i am not the musical aficionado that i thought i was lol I keep finding cool new stuff here, that i probably should have already known about! :)

It's crazy how a song like this can be slow, but yet so freaking intense! I guess that's what happens when two great artists are together. :)

Man, you can hear Harry's voice being destroyed on this track. Too bad he tried to channel Lennon's vocal style so closely; it cost him the golden pipes. Such a bittersweet album.

First time I'm hearing this version. Or so I think. I might've heard it back in the 70's. Butvthe only version I do remember hearing is by Linda Ronstadt.

Lennon liked the string arrangement he wrote for Harry Nilsson's rendition of "Many Rivers to Cross" from the album Pussy Cats so much that he decided to incorporate it into " #9 Dream "

Am I nuts, or does the music in this song sound exactly like John Lennon's #9 Dream?

This is fuckin' Awesome - Sounds more Lennon than Lennon ,... those ragged vocals worked here ,...to almost perfection ,...

This isn't a bad song for 1974. It's the Lennon like vocals that seems to make it work. Nilsson was know to imitate others.

Not to put anyone or thing down. but in all honesty, the production of this album was absolutely God awful. I wanted to like it...I really REALLY wanted to like this record cos I'm a huge fan of both Nilsson and Lennon but try as I might I just can't get past the ill fitting Phil Spector Wall of Mud sound John came up with, And Harry's voice being shot to the point of torture...I actually cried when I heard it. Sorry folks, I love Nilsson& Co but this album should never EVER have been released.
