Most people who heard this, said it is better than the original? Sometimes, it keeps playing in my head on constant loop!

You prefer cookie cutter music where artists should sound identical. Small has her own style, she isn't trying to emulate anyone. You may think you know something about music while you don't actually have a clue. Run on down to Walmart and get one, I hear they have them on sale.

It’s difficult to detach one’s self from the original work, when the original is so popular. I could think of 3 songs that became much bigger than the originals, sounded a lot different than the original version. Donna Summer singing ‘McArthur’s Park’, Simply Red singing ‘Money’s too tight too mention’ and Annie Lennox’s ‘No more I love yous’. Just out of curiosity, what do you think of those 3 covers?

I guess you must be a big fan of Michael McDonald. The original is an awesome song that sounds so different, really. To be fair, I like a lot of the Doobie Brothers songs with or without his vocals. It’s the whole production and arrangements of their songs that make them wonderful, just the way they are. I also like McDonalds’ solo songs (ones that I know), but honestly his singing is annoying by itself. Nobody can ever understand a word he says. And that’s an understatement! :)

Seriously, if you believe this version compares to the original, your appreciation of music needs to be broadened. There is no soul in Small's vocals. It's a strong voice, but she's just singing the song, not feeling it.And take the computer away, you've got nothing.

I just tried it and it won't work. It sounds very sour. The BPM's are pretty close but McDonalds voice is quite a bit higher than hers.

Both McDonald and Small have unique voices. I'd love for someone to mix the two or do a duo for this song. Their voices mesh excellently.

I'm trying to figure out who exactly holds or owns the publishing/copyrights to the original of "What a fool believes" by the Doobie Brothers. The search is getting a little confusing. I know Micahel McDonald and Kenny Loggins wrote the song, and the band & album was apart of Warner Brothers. But they say they don't have anything to do with the published sheet music and so forth. So does Sony or BMI? Who? If anyone knows for sure, I'd sure love to know. Thanks!

Funny you said that about her voice... I read somewhere that when they recorded the 1st album. She sang with a different singing voice and the producers re-recorded her vocal tracks when she sang something with that thing she does with her voice, which became her signature voice that we all know... The rest is history, of course. :)

I have been a fan since the early 90's, with Moving On Up. As far as her vocals, she sang better on records than live, and over time she has gotten worse. Whatever that thing is she does with her voice is annoying but it was minimal if non existent on the Elegant Slumming album.

Thank you for the response. Apparently, I did get you all wrong... I wonder if you are familiar with M People music in general? The vocalist has a voice that most people find overbearing. Then somehow, it grows on you. It's one of those strange things... As much as I like the original version, I find this one better with time. At least you can make up what she's saying. Michael McDonald OMG :)

You are responding all wrong. I hear it fine, I just do not like the arrangement of the vocals, they don't match the backing track IMO. I like the backing music but feel it doesn't match the vocal arrangement. It is almost like they should of created new lyrics that flow better with the music than covering the Doobie Brothers song, the vocals don't fit with the music.
