SIDE ONE (Track 04) - written by Laura Nyro

Here is the debut album of Laura Nyro, "More Than a New Discovery".

Originally issued by Verve Folkways in February 1967.

LYRICS:

I was born from love

And my poor mother worked the mines.

I was raised on the Good Book Jesus,

Till I read between the lines.

Now I don't believe

I want to see the morning.

(Morning...)

Going down the stoney end,

(Going down to the stoney end...)

I never wanted to go

Down the stoney end.

(Going down to the stoney end!)

Mama, let me start all over.

(Mama, let me start all over!)

Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again.

(Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again...)

I can still remember him

With love light in his eyes.

But the light flickered out and parted

As the sun began to rise.

Never mind the forecast,

'Cause the sky has lost control

'Cause the furry and the broken thunders

Come to match my raging soul.

Now I don't believe

I want to see the morning.

(Morning...)

Going down the stoney end,

(Going down to the stoney end...)

I never wanted to go

Down the stoney end.

(Going down to the stoney end!)

Mama, let me start all over...

(Mama, let me start all over...)

Cradle me... Mama, cradle me...

Adore Laura. But give Barbra props. She did a real nice version.

Laura's singing of this song is perfection.

I like this version so much better. It's a great song & Streisand just - I don't know - cheapened it.

I am with you on that, Ellison. Nyro has such a strong and soulful voice.

I miss you.

Streisand's rendition was faster than this one which makes it more difficult to understand the lyrics.

I just heard this song on a 70s Radio Station, though it was Barbara Streisand's cover. Funny, I thought it had a sound that reminded me of the 5th Dimension, and apparently Laura Nyro was a contributor to that band. As between the two versions, I was gratified that I could understand every word of the lyrics in Ms. Nyro's version, which I could not in Ms. Streisand's, although her voice was beautiful, rich and full of character in her version. Funny that never noticed it when it was popular.

I think its a shame that Laura Nyro is known more as a writer/contributor to more successful groups (5th dimension,Blood,Sweat & Tears,Three Dog Night,& Barbara Streisand) than as the origial writer and perfomer of those hits-I still prefer her version of Stoney End, and Wedding Bell Blues to the more commerciially successful versions---

The incomparable Miss Nyro, may her memory be a blessing. They just don't make em like they used to folks.

A song about the longing to start over...whom hasn't felt that at one time or another in life.

Harry Hill sings this song at the end of his Hooves Live DVD, (check it out), just made me laugh when i heard it, and probably will forever now! Don't know if this is meant to be a sad song or whatever, but Harry Hill makes everything funny!
