Heartbreaking song written about Ira Hayes, a dirt-poor Pima Native American and one of the Marines who raised the flag on Iwo Jima. He was unable to re-adjust to civilian life after the war and became an alcoholic, eventually dying in 1955 of exposure face down in a puddle of freezing rain. I had no idea what this song was about until I read the comment from Chris below.. Sad indeed. Hopefully today's veterans will receive better treatment at the hands of the United States Government.

Seems like the Lord has all the wonderful songs I loved on here now and this is one of them. Thank you. BLESS YOU. Barry

One of my all time favorite songs. They broke the mold with Kristofferson (although Larry Gatlin, who also sings backup, wrote the song.)

Thanks, Waldo, I've always loved this song...I think of it as a companion piece to Sunday Morning Comin' Down. It comes from somewhere deep inside and you have captured it beautifully with the images.

I think I read that this was actually written by Larry Gatlin. Given the particulars of the harmony, it's believable

It seems like yesterday and, at the same time, a thousand years ago that my high school choir friends and I considered Rita and Kris to be THE couple in music. This was great. I don't think I've heard this song since the year the album was released. Thanks so much for uploading this...great job on the video.
