A song written by Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh

Artist: Kansas

Album: Kansas

Year: 1974

Lyrics:

Two began together, lived as one

Each one to the other had become

More than a friend, living to meet a common end

They were true, each one knew all is well

Still the elder knew it could not last

Hidden memories from the young one's past

Drew them apart

Both knew that deep within his heart they must part

Each their own separate way

It puzzles me how we can be so close and yet worlds apart

Can it be, my memory has torn my life in two

From the very start

I screamed for the devil to let me be

I called to the heavens to set me free

Today I prayed for the answer and not one

Of the gods in the sky would rescue me

Dreams of fortune fill the young one's mind

Learn the worldly ways of hope to find

Love on the way, searching to find the light of day

In his soul he had found his own way

But to each other they soon will return

Destiny fulfilled, their words will burn an eternal flame

Thank you Don Kirshner for signing this band to your record label and releasing their awesome albums. Otherwise they might have played the bar scene in Kansas for a few years, gotten frustrated and broke up.

I just discovered that this song was inspired by Hermann Hesse's 'Narcissus and Goldmund'

It's absolutely amazing how a band from America's heartland can sound like the best of British Progressive Rock! Kansas is amazing!

I first started listening to this band when I was 8 years old. This summer I will see them at an outdoor concert called summer fest in milwaukee...... 40 years later........

I remember this song when I was a youngster. It was incredible ear candy and knew I was listening to one of the best American rock bands in history.

No auto-tune. Playing their own instruments. Writing their own songs. This must be very confusing to today's generation.

If you didn't hear his vibrato on those high notes you'd think it was an instrument. Walsh was incredible.

When I was 14 years of age, after hearing Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Queen and the wonderful music of this group called... Yes. I heard the music of this group of musicians called... Kansas.... Still on my mind. I was only 14 years of age... Bless .....

I read all these negative comments and wonder how many of the people posting even know a thing about music. How many of you are musicians and if you think you could do better then why haven't I heard of your band, music or compositions! It is easy to say something sucks when you don't like it isn't it! If you don't like Kansas then get the fuck off this feed!

Pure Garbage? --- I really take issue with that one. That's an opinion with no merit. If they were just what you say, they would never have gotten a record contract, sold out arenas, and influenced many American prog bands. Just to ask then -- how do feel about Proto-Kaw, Livgren's post-Kansas band? For me, they are much better than the Kansas that went through the late 80s + 90s + 00s. Nevertheless, Kansas is FAR FROM cheesy or pretentious. Why? -- Apercu, The Wall, Song For America, Magnum Opus, The Pinnacle, etc.
