One of the best pop records ever made. Full of emotion! Charted at #19 on Billboard Hot 100 in October 1958. It brought Joni back to the Billboard Top 40 after an absence of 2 years. Her most recent Top 40 hit had been "Give Us This Day" in 1956. Written by Abner Silver and Benny Davis. Orchestra directed by Acquaviva. B-side is "Funny".

The solution to having her in front of you when she sings is to put your seton "REPEAT" I do on all her songs but to this day I can't get enough of thatBeauty and that Voice. When you love someone you just love someone. That's when I see her...close your eyes and vision her there.

Beautiful rendition. The original is also beautiful, recorded by Nat King Cole in 1953.

I feel head over heels for Joni when I first heard Purple Shades. My infatuation with her beauty in both voice and person has never subsided. What a treasure.

THE EP cover was actually the cover planned for an LP titled "There Goes My Heart" but Joni doesn't think she ever even saw a song listing for it because M-G-M executives were forever planning Joni compilations without asking her and she had the contractual right to approving any release and could decline. She believed any recording should be available only on any one album, not remarketed and remarketed. Four songs were recorded at the "There Goes My Heart" session, two still unreleased but Joni has the masters and she still plans to issue them in a special collector's album eventually. Her unreleased recordings are every bit as outstanding as what was released.

Thank you so much for posting this incredibly beautiful song by Joni James. This song and There Must Be A Way are my 2 favorite songs by her. I can listen to both of these songs over and over again and never get tired of hearing them.

This is the same orchestration that MGM employed when launching Connie Francis in 1958...hey, why change horses, right?

This cover, by the way, was to have been the cover to an L.P. titled "There Goes My Heart" but instead M-G-M went with the later album "More Joni Hits." The recording session for this record was just amazing. Joni did four songs, two yet to be released, and she did one of them brilliantly. And this is all live, Joni singing with the entire orchestra, not to tracks. Morty Craft is credited as producer but, really, Joni did the producing, even altering the arrangement a bit.

This was the first "adult" song I learned to sing when I was a kid...before that all I knew were nursery songs..and Tagalog songs which I sang very well too!
