Released on the 1955 album, "When I Fall in Love". "Love Letters" was also released as a single in September 1956, but did not chart in Billboard. I would guess that this might be so because the recording had already been available on the album for almost a year (the album was released in October 1955). This song had previously charted at #11 in Billboard for Dick Haymes in September 1945 (I have also posted his version). It was featured in the movie "Love Letters" as a musical theme. The movie starred Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, and Ann Richards.

A remake by Ketty Lester was a #5 hit on the Hot 100 in February 1962 (#4 UK, #2 R&B) and another remake by Elvis Presley charted at #19 in July 1966 (#6 UK, #38 Adult Contemporary). In the UK, it charted at #4 for Alison Moyet in November 1987. My favorite versions of the song are this one by Joni James and a version by Bobby Darin.

Written by Edward Heyman and Victor Young.

B-side of the single is "Don't Take Your Love From Me".

"When I Fall In Love" actually is two albums! Originally it was an eight-song album intended for a 10-inch L.P. Then 12-inch LPs became the industry standard so Joni went back into the studio several months later to do four more songs for a 12-inch album. Now here is the interesting part. On 45 rpm the original eight-song appears as recorded in a two-record set. The additional four appear on a single-record EP with the songs in the order they were recorded! "Love Letters" was the final song

Joni's "When I Fall in Love" was never a single release. One song was pulled from the album as as a single, "Love Letters," and I am happy to say I was the person who first suggested it be released as a single with "Don't Take Your Love From Me." There were so many similiar requests from fans and radio programmers, the decision was made to release the single and see what happened saleswise. It did very well.

I'm very proud to say I was one of the many fans who asked that "Love Letters" and "Don't Take Your Love From Me" be released as a single. Joni first said there were no plans to do so but the mail grew to such a number the decision was made to do, a rare example at the time of album tracks being released as a single. Both sides got tremendous radio play, which led to tremendous album sales for the albums they came from, "When I Fall in Love" and "In the Still of the Night."

While all love letters are special, to a blind person like me, love letters in braille are the most special of all. I've been blessed-one girl in the '80s and one in the '90s sent me braille love letters. what a great secret to have. After I was married I went to train with a new Seeing Eye dog, and my wife sent tapes almost daily. Everybody thought they were love letters, since they all knew we were newlyweds. I didn't bother saying most were about a business project we were doing.
