Thank you so much for posting this - wonderful! I'm a relatively new fan of Cash, and really love his music, his life and what he stood for. The world really is less for his passing, but at least he made one hell of a mark!

Here's some more details on the harmonicas and how they were used in this song: I was recently asked by a private student to help him with the harmonicas used for this Johnny Cash version of "Orange Blossom Special" so I thought I'd share it here too. I worked with this particular version of the song. My notes below won't work with any other studio or live version... (click below on the "Read More" for the details)--To play along, you'll need standard 10-hole diatonic harmonicas in the keys of "F" and "Bb". Johnny's technical level was beginner. If you have these two correct keys of harmonicas, you can play this too, no matter how much or how little you've played harmonica. He mostly just blows and draws and makes a few "tuka" sounds with his mouth. Just play along and "fake it" until it sounds close. The most important point is that you change harmonicas at the right times as outlined below.(NOTE: He apparently played his harmonicas upside down. There is no advantage to this, only disadvantages. He was self-taught, so he didn't know. You should not do this. Hold the harmonica with the low notes to the left like a piano.)At the times in the video, he is either playing the harmonica in 1st Position or 2nd Position. In short, 1st Position (also called "Straight Harp") is accomplished by playing mostly blow (exhale) notes in the middle part of the harmonica (i.e. holes 3, 4, and 5 blow). 2nd Position (also called "Cross Harp") is accomplished by playing mostly draw (inhale) notes at the lower part of the harmonica (i.e. holes 2, 3, and 4 draw).FOR MORE POSITION INFORMATION: 1st and 2nd Position styles of diatonic harmonica playing are discussed in detail, including video instruction, in our HarmonicaLessons(dot)com Members Area-Have fun with it- Dave Gage--:10 "F" diatonic in 2nd Position (C chord - draw low notes):34 "F" diatonic in 2nd Position (C chord - draw low notes):41 "F" diatonic in 1st Position (F chord- this is where he modulates to the key of "F" and stays there until the end of the harmonica part where he goes back to the key of "C" at 1:09 on video):43 "Bb" diatonic in 1st Position (Bb chord - blow):45 "F" diatonic in 2nd Position (C chord - draw low notes):47 "F" diatonic in 1st Position (F chord - blow):50 "Bb" diatonic in 1st Position (Bb chord - blow):52 "F" diatonic in 2nd Position (C chord - draw low notes):54 "F" diatonic in 1st Position (F chord - blow):55 "F" diatonic in 1st Position (F chord - blow):59 "F" diatonic in 2nd Position (C chord - draw low notes)1:02 "F" diatonic in 1st Position (F chord - blow)1:05 "Bb" diatonic in 1st Position (Bb chord - blow)1:07 "F" diatonic in 1st Position (F chord - blow on low notes)1:08 "F" diatonic in 2nd Position (C chord - draw low notes)1:08 "F" diatonic in 1st Position (F chord - blow)1:09 "F" diatonic in 2nd Position (back to final C chord)

Ah ha, finally a live version in the key of "C". Some versions are in the key of "Db" and most students don't have the 2 harmonicas to play along in that key. On this version, you just need a key of "F" (played in 2nd Position in the key of "C") and key of "Bb" diatonics to play his harmonica parts. Not too hard, but you need to have the correct 2 harmonicas.
