It's about religion, the water is salvation, you see he's searching for salvation and finds it (the water). God shows him the way to the water and he drinks the water, he prays for water (god shows you the way to salvation, you pray for it, with him you get it). He says stay away from the devil because hes not a man he'll burn you instead of giving you water (salvation). The devils main goal is to destroy you, he says don't listen to him, don't follow him. Quest for god and salvation is what he is saying. Another good Hank Williams tune, that Johnny tried to sing, but, Hank sings it better.

Great song!!! Awsome version. This is a deep and complicated song. His struggle of pain and his addictions are revealed in a beautiful and poetic way. I feel like I can hear Hank's desire, pain, fear, and love for a mixture of God and all his comfortable freinds(whiskey, opiates, and who knows what else.) I can relate to his concerns and love for both paths in life. Love this song...

@Marius RocknrollI have to agree, Slim Whitman did this song right.I can't say I much care for The Browns version. That's like trying to listen to Peter, Paul and Mary while they destroy Blowin' in the Wind. I could go a whole lifetime without ever having heard the group whose biggest hit!? song was Puff the Magic Dragon. The "best-selling" version by Vaughan Monroe and his orchestra is really hard to listen to as well.
