"Not the strongest vocalist" -- I don't know about that. Her voice has become irreplaceable to me. If a "stronger" vocalist played these songs with just as much skill and emotion, I would still prefer Joanna. I've listened to probably hundreds of covers, wondering about that. I want to yell at those strong, clear, commercial voices, "quirk it up!!!" But that's selfish of me. Bottom line: Joanna is genius, inimitable Joanna and that tends to be why people love her and her music.

when she first broke out with the witch child voice i loved the lyrics but she aggrevated me no end too. but then it was exactly what you said. a Siren. i saw a lot of live gigs but nothing compares to Joanna at the grand canal theatre, dublin, september 2010. a genius without a doubt.

I just had an epiphany of why I love Joanna Newsom and her music so much! It is the harp, the ancient quality of the instrument and the healing properties of it's acoustics, combined with the soothsaying recital of balanced poetry by a woman's voice, which is comforting in general because of the simple fact that we all in the womb were comforted by the intonations and vibrations of our mothers voices, be they coarse or silk. All of that together, and the California woman that she is

That's one of the things I love about Newsom's songs. Sadie is a great example of her stellar songwriting. To this day I think it might be one of the greatest songs, front to back, I've every had the pleasure of enjoying.

I love the way her songs progress. It's like she tricks you into thinking it's following a normal structure, and then goes off on these crazy tangents which take the song where you never knew you wanted it to go.
