I've listened to this song performed by the Highwaymen which I enjoy more. I’ve trawled youtube for the original recorded version by the songs writer, Jimmy Webb again here with the sultan of swing, Mark Knopfler. Both recordings are distinctive in the characteristic vocal nuance and intonation - like, Wichita Line Man - that it’s a Jimmy Webb song. Glen Campbell recorded a similar rendition also with strings and horns giving their versions a dated sound rooted back to the 1970’s when it was first recorded and when groups like the Fifth Dimension were charting high on the Cashbox 100 singing about beautiful balloons.The Highwaymen recorded the song with a very different treatment and it’s more believable because of this. They themselves seem more real as the Highwayman, Sailor, Dam builder and star-ship pilot of the song. These are men who tell a story as if it were biographical and their emotion is raw and untamed.

Hello Dan. Thanks for reply. Some people get so worked up about stuff. All we have is our own likes/dislikes. For me Willie/Merle's rendition of 'Pancho & Lefty' is the tops, 'Hello In There' by Bette Midler takes some beating, but I do believe that John Prine, who wrote it, does just as good a version in a different way, (if you get what I mean. Trust I haven't bored you. There are some brilliant songs/singers out there. Atkins/Knopfler cd I have is great.

I'm not going to bite your head off. And yes it's hard to beat the version with 4 great characters. But Jimmy Webb actually did the original in 1977 although I haven't heard that one

You will probably blind me with your knowledge, of which I care not one jot. All I have said is that this is a poor version, (maybe picked my words better) of the song. Personally, I prefer the version by 4 of the giants of the music world. As someone once said, "This is just an opinion, but let us not forget whose opinion it is." As an aside, you all seem to take yourselves WAYYYYYYY too seriously. These are opinions, no name calling from me, just my humble opinion.

Oh my! No I am not an uninformed American, just someone who prefers The Highwaymen version of this song. Just because you wrote it doesn't make you the best person to sing it. Townes Van Zandt wrote some great songs, but recorded by better singers.
