He opened with this song at the Arcosanti Festival (Arizona) in 1976, and dedicated the song to the hunter/gunman who was up in the far left side (if one was facing the stage) of the ampitheater before Jackson took the stage. He turned out to be harmless, and left before the show started.I was reminded of this just this past Saturday night when we hosted Tom Rush at our concert series (Sanctuary Concerts, Chatham, N.J.), and he told the story of this happening, as a back drop to him doing "These Days" which he recorded long before Jackson's "For Everyman".And yes, it is also one of my faves from him.

I shut the right door of the car as my pretty Sonja slides in- followed by that beautiful, solid sound-- then I shut the left door of the car as I get in....and I turn the ignition, and we just flow away..... Jackson, dude, thanks for putting the dream into words, and so inviting its reality!

"Jackson Browne told Mojo magazine April 2008 about the album: "Late For The Sky was made very quickly, in about a month. I had moved back into the house that my grandfather had built when my father was just an adolescent (its name was Abbey San Encino; Browne's grandfather founded Abbey Press). I was newly a father, and I would look at my son playing in this house and remember being that age myself with my father. I wrote those songs, sitting in the miniature chapel my grandfather had built in this house, with a pipe organ in it and a choir loft. There was this kind of continuum, some kind of great metaphoric terrain there for me: I grew up there, moved away, but had come back to raise my family."*Released in 74 this lyric is somewhat apropo. On the scale of prescient lyrics it might only be a two but it is a strong two.* Now I'm so tired of all this circlingAnd all these glimpses of the end(You know it's useless to pretend)That's all the voices say:"You'll go right on circlingUntil you've found some kind of friend"* *The Late Show*Everyone I've ever known has wished me wellAnyway that's how it seems, it's hard to tellMaybe people only ask you how you're doing'Cause that's easier than letting on how little they could careBut when you know that you've got a real friend somewhereSuddenly all the others are so much easier to bearNow to see things clear it's hard enough I knowWhile you're waiting for reality to showWithout dreaming of the perfect loveAnd holding it so far aboveThat if you stumbled onto someone real, you'd never know(You'd never know)You could be with somebody who is lonely too(Sometimes it doesn't show)He might be trying to get across to you(Words can be so slow)When your own emptiness is all that's getting throughThere comes a point when you're not sure why you're still talkingI passed that point long ago(Long ago)Now I'm so tired of all this circlingAnd all these glimpses of the end(You know it's useless to pretend)That's all the voices say:"You'll go right on circlingUntil you've found some kind of friend"I saw you through the laughter and the noiseYou were talking with the soldiers and the boysWhile they scuffled for your weary smilesI thought of all the empty milesAnd the years that I've spent looking for your eyes(Looking for your eyes)And now I'm sitting here wondering what to say(That you might recognize)Afraid that all these words might scare you away(And break through the disguise)No one ever talks about their feelings anywayWithout dressing them in dreams and laughterI guess it's just too painful otherwiseLook...It's like you're standing in the windowOf a house nobody lives inAnd I'm sitting in a car across the way(Let's just say)It's an early model Chevrolet(Let's just say)It's a warm and windy dayYou go and pack your sorrowThe trash man comes tomorrowLeave it at the curb and we'll just roll awaySubmit Corrections JACKSON BROWNE Lyrics A-Z Lyrics

I too "passed that point long ago"...Jackson Browne, I God!"Everyone I've ever known has wished me wellAnyway that's how it seems, it's hard to tellMaybe people only ask you how you're doing'Cause that's easier than letting on how little they could careBut when you know that you've got a real friend somewhereSuddenly all the others are so much easier to bear"

If truth is beauty, and beauty truth, then Jackson Browne is - in more than one way - the most beautiful songwriter in the history of music.

I could never express the feelings and thoughts I had about friends, people and relationships. But when I first heard this song, I couldn't stop listening to it. I found that it said exactly what I never could find the words to say. Just started listening to Jackson Browne this year and now he's my favorite songwriter and performer, and I just CANNOT get enough of this album.
