At some time in the 80s he had infected tonsils with nodules on them removed by a German doctor. The English doctors had not detected the problem with tonsils. This is probably the main reason he disbanded Gillan. In his autobiography he mentions his voice needing a rest. Not much is found about the tonsillectomy. I saw him discussing it in an interview on YouTube. Apparently his voice improved a great deal. Of course, he continued to abuse it with smoking and drinking!

Good question. Infected tonsils with nodes removed sometime in the 80s, I think, but I don't know the year. Perhaps toward the end since Accidentally on Purpose with Roger Glover (1988) was excellent though not rock. And his voice sounded good in early 90s on video "Getaway" with Greek Singer Rakintzis. However, live performance not so good. He still smoked and drank. Probably the smoking did the worse damage.

I agree Toolbox was superb vocally, for me it was Ian Gillans last truly great studio performance .The question that must be asked though is if he could still perform like this why didnt he do it in Deep Purple at the time?

His voice was terrific here. The screams (which weren't really screams since he had vibratto, etc., at the higher octives) were great. 1991 . . . After Purple had fired him. Couldn't keep him down!
