On this day in 1961 {March 9th} the Supremes released their first single, "I Want A Guy", on the Tamla Record label... The Supremes were a quartet at the time; Barbara Martin left the group in early 1962... Three years and five months later on August 22nd, 1964 "Where Did I Love Go" became their first of twelve #1 records... In 1962 the Marvelettes covered "I Want A Guy"; it was the B-side of "Twistin' Postman", which peaked at #34 on the Top 100... R.I.P. Florence Ballard {1943 - 1976}...

lol & Mary also went down in history as the biggest "woe is me" person in show business along with Florence(The Martyr) Ballard

Mary had all the married men (four tops, temps) Mary was a hoe & a smut bucket. Diana on the other hand had the man that mattered (Berry Gordy) sweety and the daughter to guarntee her legacy would be secured: learn it sweety.

Damn... Hot Buttered Popcorn was the worst. I see why Berry never gave Flo another lead; that shit sounds like crap on top of crap; but sidebar Miss Ross turned I want a guy. And that's what a true diva does--Mary & Flo ain't nothing but common (Effie White voice)

@mrdeshun92 Diane Renay, who had two hits in 1964, "Blue Navy" and "Kiss Me Sailor".

Yeah, it's Diane Renay. The photo was taken on Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars in 1964 at the time "Where Did Our Love Go" hit. Allow me to correct the lead singer on the Marvelettes' version of "I Want A Guy". It's Wanda, not Gladys. It was more suited to Wanda's sultry style and she did put her mark on it. "Buttered Popcorn" was a throwaway, to be sure. Should have been the B-side of "Who's Lovin' You". Nothing against Flo, mind you, but Diana's side wins hands down.

The woman pictured with The Supremes 6 seconds in is Diane Renay,, who toured with them once back in the day, & who is best known for the hit record, "Navy Blue". A popular classic song in it's own right!

@ronaldt491 The Marvellettes. Have you read any of the books about Motown? They are great reading!

Wasn't this done by another group back then? I think I remember seeing it on ajukebox on the Tamla label. Yes I know Tamla is one of the Motown labels.

This was the first Supremes single under that name, in 1961; "Never Again" was the B-side. Berry Gordy helped write it; it didn't chart. Barbara Martin was still with the group at that time. The girls had several more years to go before the floodgates would open. What distinguished this early effort from the later hits? Easy--the rhythm section. Play the first several Number Ones after this tepid doo-wopper. It's the beat.

I prefer the Marvelettes' version better. Gladys Horton's had more emotion.

@wonderboyjoy I agree. I haven't listened to enough DR to comment on her specifically, but heavy marketing does make careers and create all of these "legends" people then glorify.
