If you played the trumpet then you understand what he is doing. Not just on this number but everything he did. Dam near impossible.

@mariaromanoff This isn't Jazz its bigband music. Jazz is improvised music, and requires a totally different approach. Jazz 'can' be far more unique than bigband, since bigband was the top of the pops of it's day and was required to be repeatable n dance halls across the world. So king of Jazz, no he wasn't but King of the dance halls and big band music he definately was.

Honestly, I don't like your opening fanfares. Can't you leave the original music alone?

Harry James makes his trumpet "sing" and "swing." He was the coolest cat! A true virtuoso! Everyone has their favorite horn player and he is mine.

@trumpetvids My understanding was the Goodman fired Zeke Zarchy as lead for James. And Goodman, uncharacteristically, then found Zarchy another job. Zarchy said that we he first heard James, he thought it was unbelievable "It was like fire coming from his horn." We're not talking some starry-eyed kid here: Zeke was a pretty fair player. The first time Lionel Hampton heard James, his comment to Goodman was "Pops, this guy can PLAY."

James could play anything. His technique was immaculate. If you play trumpet and you don't know that, you should be in another line of work. Yeah, there are a lot of great players. And James was one of the best. Period

@bvb7589 Anyone with musical training? You are aware that the unknowledgeable slacker Benny Goodman who could have hired anyone hired James for his band? Anyone with a musical background would know that Harry James is highly regarded by many fine brass players today. Yes, Harry could easily impress, because he was an impressive player.

Anyone that thinks Harry is bad or even this very song by him is bad, is just a communist. And nobody listens to communists. =)

hey bvb, it gives me a kick when fops like you try to take down a man who was one of the musicians of his generation. If you can't enjoy something like this without critiquing it to clinical pieces, that's YOUR loss!! You are a LOSER!

@bvb7589 Are you talking about the person who gave this video 4 stars or Harry James? If your talking about Harry James then i am sorry but you are wrong that he is a "red neck". He's a quite well known jazz trumpet player and deeply respected musician. So please know who he is before insulting him.

@bvb7589 You wouldn't know a good musician if you heard one, and Harry James was the best. If you are referring to classical musicians, most of them are so banal as to put one to sleep. James entertained and his name will live on much longer than pompous clowns like you. You should open your closed mind and smell the daisies.

@bvb7589 It is sad to read such clap trap from a uninformed stiff-knecked know it all. Harry James was a consumate musian who could play anything written for trumpet. He was the greatest trumpet player of all time. He added the warm of a gorgeous tone to his charts, a wonderful change from the tone dead classical trumpet players. I've played trumpet for 77 years and have had considerable musical training and consider your stupid remarks as in the worst taste poosible.

Personally, I think it is cool, and you may have a different opinion, but it's not Harry James' fault. Either way, it is now a trumpet/cornet standard and is recorded by pretty much every great trumpet player. Sorry for the multiple posts; I am having trouble with youtube.

@bvb7589 Just to clarify- the only thing Harry James added was the jazz solo, and I don't think that's what you are referring to as the overdone "fanfarria." I'm assuming that what you call the "fanfarria" is all the difficult 32nd note stuff in the middle, and if that is the case, then understand that Arban wrote that, not Harry James.
