Aww, let's not quibble over the "Finest Band in the Land's" choices, lest we forget the Roots, right back to New Riders, et al. A classic number, I like it electric with Jerry Mixing it up with Bobby, double lead, Mexicali style. The dead covered everything from Cowboy to Elvis to Motown. It's all good.

This is an incredibly hard song to play, but it is a pretty mediocre version compared to other dead versions. Having said that, I freaked out at every time I heard El Paso live. Jay

Martin David Robinson, better known as *Marty Robbins* (September 26, 1925 – December 8, 1982.)And what better way than having Grateful Dead covering one of his songs? Oh, it was also used in Breaking Bad's final episode.#dapimusic #mymusichangout #countrymusic #martyrobbins #singersongwriter #guitarist #pianist #dobro #actor #nascardriver #grammyawards #bornonthisday #bornonthisdate #coversong #gratefuldead

I think their strength lay in their unique ability to complement each other. Weir admits to it in one of his post-Garcia interviews. That helps work out a perfect sync and I think also the reason anyone who listens to the Dead are hooked for life.

Enough of the negative comments on Marty, Merle has said that Marty was his favorite country performer. dead fans are jealous that this song was superior to any of their songs. probably why it was the most requested song of their's.

Classic Rock

Did You Know...Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead often introduced the Marty Robbins penned "El Paso" as the band's "most requested number." Over a twenty-five year period, The Dead performed the tune 389 times.

This may be the beautiful version I have heard. Very distinctive and elegant.

@bpar73 You're wrong this version is sublime. Jerry's vocals perhaps a bit weak but his playing is transcendentally beautiful.

Saw them in 94 in Chicago. Way too many mushrooms that day but its a day that i will never forget.

Jerry's kind of struggling......a rushed, sloppy, throwaway version in the grand scheme of things
