I've had several people recently ask me "What is backpack rap". (This thing Janiene keeps bathering on about.) Only having the reference mainstream rap, crunk, nerdcore, etc., most folks immediately think of mainstream and/or crunk. So, I dug out a great definition of backpack rap from dictionary.com: " 'Backpack rapper' is a phrase usually given to a young aspiring musician who's lyrics are deep and dictate life experiences, often his own, or those of a social group to which he feels a strong association. The iconic 'backpack' is literal, referring to the backpack in which many aspiring rappers carry as they travel."P.O.S. is a great example, but there are others:Brother Ali - Brother Ali - The PreacherAtmosphere - Atmosphere - You (This is actually pretty upbeat for them. Slug clearly uses songs to work through issues and examine his demons.)Dessa - Dessa "Dixon's Girl" Music VideoDoomtree - 80's already posted a song of which Dessa is part of.Living Legends - Living Legends (The Grouch) - Artsy (Lyrics) (This song features The Grouch, but it's another music consortium, like Doomtree. I kind of wavered on these guys, but decided that it was good to show that backpack rap is coming up with interesting consortiums and other ways to learn, tour, survive, etc., which all very difficult unless you are a Star.)Basically, these are the musicians that made me see hip hop is always evolving. It's amazing to think that these artists have been doing this for years, yet the genre hasn't crested. I guess I'm actually kind of glad of that because if this genre ever breaks out of the Rhymsayers label, the big companies will take something that started as painfully observant and sometimes makes us laugh at our own foibles and will take all that away. This is on my mind as we'll be seeing a hip hop festival this weekend that is very backpack rap heavy. Even though it means we're traveling to Minnesota for a weekend, I'm super excited!

I kno that, but hes the only one worth listening to out of all of them. Dessa has a few good tracks but I just dont really like any others, they all do like the poetry rap with lame beats.
