This song was written by songwriter Jimmy Webb, who also wrote Campbell's hits By the Time I Get to Phoenix and Wichita Lineman. Webb also wrote MacArthur Park, which was a hit for both Richard Harris and Donna Summer, and Up-Up and Away, which was recorded by The 5th Dimension. Jimmy Webb was on a beach in Galveston, Texas when he wrote this Glen Campbell hit. He made up the story about a soldier in the Spanish-American war and the girl he left behind in Galveston.

Lyrics

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'

I still see her dark eyes glowin'

She was 21, when I left Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing

While I watch the cannons flashing

I clean my gun and dream of Galveston

I still see her standing by the water

Standing there lookin' out to sea

And is she waiting there for me

On the beach where we used to run?

Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying

Before I dry the tears she's crying

Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun

At Galveston, at Galveston

As Daniel said, thank you to all Viet Nam vets....I lost a good friend to that battle, and I also lost a lot of faith in my country.

I heard the song was originally about a soldier in the Spanish American War. That would explain the "cannons" in the lyrics.

I'm not sure it was a Vietnam related song due to him watching 'the cannons flashing' but it's a applicable to war in the long run.

I've always liked Glen Campbell, and another guy, that I think is so much like him, John Denver.

no 1s here

I was a kid (adolescent) in the small town of Salmon Idaho when this was popular. We had but one state trooper whose last name was "Albiston". We made up a song about him (to this melody). It went something like "Albiston, oh Albiston, I can see your red light glowin', I can hear your siren blowin' " etc. We had fun with it. Not much for kids to do in a small town then.

On this day in 1969 {April 2nd} Glen Campbell performed "Galveston" on his own CBS-TV program 'The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour'... At the time the song was at #5 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; a week later it would peak at #4 {for 1 week} and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #1 {for 3 weeks} on April 13th, 1969 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart... And on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart it reached #1 {for 6 weeks} on March 23rd, 1969... North of the border in Canada it would reached #1 on both the RPM Country Singles* and Contemporary Singles chart... * On the Canadian Country Singles chart it was his third of six straight #1 records on that chart...

I was there with you Ken, always praying I would make it home, so many I knew that didn't. All that's left is their name on a plaque at city hall. It was a long time ago, but its still fresh on my mind. To this day I hate that place, and I hate war, such a waste of a young lives.

This song is like so many of Glen's and Jimmy Webb's songs: on the surface a seemingly simple and straight-forward homage to a town, but underneath, and with the greatest economy of words, they paint stirring emotional pictures of deep and complex subjects. In this case, it's about love (of a place and a woman, war and parting). It's a song I put in the category of "Witchita Lineman": "simple" subject matters that conceal and eventually reveal deep existential truths. These are timeless gems, and American pop music doesn't get any better than this.Kenneth B. (Viet Nam vet in the comments below): Glen and Jimmy wrote this song for guys like you! And I'm sure there were many, and I'm sure it resonated with you the most. You can feel the songwriters' empathy and compassion for their weighty subject. Also, one of my favorite parts of this video is Glen soloing over the end. Glen was such a great guitar player that they let him free-style solo over the end of what was mostly a recorded track for tv. I love his playing, so free and soulful. The complete package. He is a one of a kind and found his musical soul mate in Jimmy Webb. Both you guys are in my thoughts and prayers!

Jimmy Webb also wrote "The Highwayman", by The Highwaymen" (Willie, Kris, Waylon, and Johnny).....re Glenn Campbell, in the vids, he always shows such infectious joy and fun when he starts pickin that guitar....so talented as a vocalist (his range, intonation, phrasing), yet his musical "heart" is deep in the bodies of his guitars (6 or 12-string, acoustic or electric)...
