Lyrics

Well I wake up in the morning

With my hair down in my eyes

And she says "hi"

And I hurry to the breakfast table

While the kids are goin' off to school, goodbye.

And she reaches out and takes my hand

And squeezes it, and says how you feeling hon?

And I look across at smiling lips

That warm my heart, and I see my morning sun.

And if that's not lovin' me,

Then all I've got to say,

God didn't make the little green apples,

And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summer time.

There's no such thing as Dr. Seuss

Disneyland and Mother Goose,

No nursery rhymes.

God didn't make the little green apples,

And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summer time.

And when myself is feeling low,

I think about your face aglow and ease my mind.

Sometimes I call him up, knowing he's busy.

To ask if he could get away, meet me

Maybe grab a bite to eat.

And he drops what he's doing

Hurries down to meet me, and I'm always late.

But he sits waiting patiently,

And smiles when he first sees me,

Cause he's made that way.

And if that's not loving me,

Then all I got to say,

God didn't make the little green apples,

And it don't snow in Minneapolis when the winter comes.

There's no such thing as make-believe,

Puppy dogs or autumn leaves, no bb guns.

God didn't make the little green apples,

And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summer time.

And when myself is feeling low,

I think about your face aglow and ease my mind...

I have to laugh when I hear this song. This song use to upset my grandmother. She thought they were saying that God DIDN'T make the little green apples. I explained it to her that it wasn't an anti-God song! Loved my grandma!

always thought this was Roger Miller's composition. Not many who'd rhyme apples and Indianapolis... which is one amazing hook.

My brother and mom didn't get along -- and he just finally gave up trying -- except for sending her a music box with this song!!  I knew immediately that he was telling her how much he loved her -- but mom couldn't understand for some reason. Now I have the music box - and love all it represents - in my life.Glen - dear man - my prayers are with you on your journey through Alzheimer's.

This is the best duet for this song ever! It doesn't sound much like country music though.

I grew up with these two -- it brings me back to 1968 I was 12 years old and remember listening to the men land on the moon as I'm floating down the Spokane River with a bunch of friends on inner tubes -- country was big in my house although i enjoyed all genres of music -- country will always have a place in my heart -- these two in my book were the originals and this did climb up the charts.
