Gil Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 -- May 27, 2011) was an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his work as a spoken word performer in the 1970s and 80s, and for his collaborative soul works with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Heron's recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". His poetic style has been influential upon every generation of hip hop since his popularity began.[3] In addition to being widely considered an influence in today's music, Scott-Heron remained active until his death, and in 2010 released his first new album in 16 years, entitled I'm New Here.

And they got me struggling to remember, they're telling me it wasn't of any importance, but it meant something to me, but since they have nothing to reflect on, they want me to be like them, misery loves company. A very precious time, la de lala la la la de dummmmm. The thoughts that filled his mind were a very special kind and were home to him alone. What it means to him, is all that's important. Gil at his best baring his soul before the world. Thanks for the education Gil.This is one of my favorites.

Share in the light sister, the good thing about the light is, when you share it, unlike money, it increases. Share the light. A soldier from those times.i

One of the most talented and intuitive poets of the 20th Century. Like Donald Byrd (who passed away yesterday), Gil laid down the soundtrack of my youth. They say the election of Obama brought in and era hope. But that's what the 70s meant to US - endless possibilities, profound hope. As a Black girl became a Black woman, I couldn't have asked for a better time to "be". A very precious time, indeed. RIP Gil and Donald.

i thank you so much for posting this song.... when i purchased this album, it just....just awakened parts of my life internally that i didnt even know existed. it's a very melancholy album, but hope and joy are so evident at the same time. i am so saddened by the news of the passing of our Dear Brother. I miss him so much already...my heart goes out to his family, loved ones and close friends. Rest In Power Mr. Heron, i love You.
