Charted at #4 on Billboard Hot 100 in April 1957. Gale's last charting single. Original Billboard review: "This side is a romantic item, a cover of Bonnie Guitar's version. Song's construction shows the Tex-Mex influence. Gale Storm's vocal has plenty of charm." Billboard rating: 81 out of 100. Also #6 for Bonnie Guitar on the Hot 100 (#14 Country) during the same month and #17 in the UK for Tony Brent in June 1957. This song was also recorded by Teresa Brewer for an album.

Written by Ned Miller.

MAGNIFICENT SONG BY GALE! I am curious whether Billy Vaughn did the accompaniment for Gale & arranged her numbers.

I should add that Bonnie Guitar made a newer version of Dark Moon in stereo in 1985 for her "Yesterday" album, Tumbleweed Records TWS 116. It is a very good recording but it sounds more like a Nashville style recording using steel guitars and such. Fun trivia: in 1969 Bonnie married Mario diPiano, I wonder if the newspaper announcement read something like "Guitar - Piano to wed"

Hello Bon, you ask an interesting question. The original Bonnie Guitar version was released mono on Fabor 4018 and Dot 15550, both releases are from the same 1956 session. A few years later Dark Moon was released in her album on Dot DLP 3335 but no stereo version was offered. This implies there was only one released version exists. I would speculate that what you heard was an MP3 made from a vinyl disk using a turntable that ran a bit faster that 33 or 45 RPM; this is very common.

When I first looked for Bonnie Guitar's version here there was one recording a little faster tempo, just a little, then it disappeared. I'm pretty sure it was a Sony release. It had a beautiful rich full sound, like this one. I've looked on MP3 on Amazon but can't find it.

This may be Gale Storm's magnus opus, I'm beginning to prefer her version over all the others even though I am a great fan of Bonnie Guitar ( know the story of how Randy Wood made this the #1 version by covering Bonnie). Gale's version is probably backed by Billy Vaughn's orchestra and the rich baritone backup singers are probably the great Jack Halloran Singers. Gale sings this song with a bit of girlish innocence adding only a little of her professional acting skills, altogether lovely.
