캞리포니아에서 텍사스 EL PASO까지,24피트 브라질 산 FORD트럭을 몰고 가면,열 여섯 시간이 걸린다.가면서 두 번 기름을 채우고,커다란 머그잔에 커피를 가득 채우고,뭔가 씹을 만한 젤리와 말린 고기를 산다.그리고 마실 물,,,이렇게 EL PASO에 도착해서,가지고 간 물건을 다 내리고서바로 캘리포니아 Los Angeles를 향해고속도로를 탄다.왜냐하면,일이 끝나면 저녁 시간이 되고,밤에 차를 몰아야 덜 피곤하고,멀리 갈 수가 있기 때문이다.이렇게 L.A를 향해서 오다가,잠시 차를 새워서 잠을 자기 전 까지는,거의 30시간을 꼬박 차 안에서 보내게 된다.거의 눈이 감겨서 운전을 하곤 하다가Rest Area로 들어서면,시동을 끄고서 바로 의자에 드러눕는다.갑작스레 잠을 청하기에,선뜻 잠은 오지 않고,,,,잠시 누워서 쉬는 동안눈은 다시 말똥말똥해진다.그럼 다시 L.A를 향해 트럭을 몰고서고속도로로 들어선다.그러다가,,,다시Rest Area가 나오기 까지,몰려 오는 잠과 외로운 싸움을 한다.이런 식으로 서너번 반복이 되면,어느 순간인가,,,,따스한 햇볕에 못이겨 눈을 뜰때까지,깊은 잠에 빠져 버린다.
