1979 to mid 1986 was Elton's peak for vocal range. He was able to hit notes into the 5th octave without falsetto and had great switching and blending between vocal registers.

Oh man: You must have caught him during that October 7-10 timeframe (he even did two shows in one day on October 10th). On the two Los Angeles shows on Youtube, Elton sounds REALLY BAD (just like razor blades and marbles)! The later 1986 shows are great for the music, but not for Elton's voice!

@thelurker25 Agreed, the 85-86 tour was not the best although the many voice changes from Elton over the years give the songs new forms of life. I personally think 76-77 was his best era for vocal range, it was strong and he hit the high notes perfectly.

@formulaonemad You should of heard him at the Universal in L.A. He came out singing the song tonight, and after having bragged about how great he sounds, and his range. He comes out and sounded like he just gargled with razor blades and marbles! And I had tickets for 4 nights, and just prayed it was temporary! It wasn't!That was the last of the great falsetto!
