My god this song is absolutely beautiful. I went to a school system where prejudice towards different people was just a way of life. As I grew older and started to produce intelligent thoughts of my own, I slowly started to realize what I was losing by turning my back on other things because they were different from me. Maybe they were, black, gay, whatever. It didn't do to dwell on things so inconsequential. Elton John, gay or not, has over the past few months become one of my favorite artists of all time and this song is a good reason why. Lyrics and melodies are no longer combined in such a beautiful way. I could care less what his sexual preference is. Anyone that can make music as excellent as this is truly gifted and should be experienced by all.

Commerative that he had to sing illustrative poetry. Bernie's words were no silly lyrics. Elton had genius and tremendous work ethic.

I LOVE this BEAUTIFUL song! I'm a piano player& the music is simple yet genius! Elton's voice is a velvet rose, flawless. This song means how Elton's songwriter friend saw NYC. The main chorus " While Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters, sons of bankers, sons of lawyers say good morning to the night" Basically the constant bustle of working 24/7 whether you're pretty (Mona Lisa's), Performers ( Mad Hatters) or Wall Street Business types( sons of bankers, etc). I wish I had more space 2 explain the rest

Can anyone explain what these lyrics mean? Not just the theme of the song, I get that, but what does each line of the lyrics mean, for instance:Until you've seen this trash can dream come trueYou stand at the edge while people run you throughWhat does that mean? Literally.

I *LOVE* this song SO MUCH, and really want to sing it in a Cabaret show next month, but it seems like Sir Elton changes the key on it a LOT.The lowest notes seem to range from a C3 to an A2... (Bb2 is pretty much the bottom of my Tenor1//Alto2 range...) Tricky - even for a female with quite the low vocal range.Thinking I may just stick to "Levon," which I have been singing for YEARS, and is right in the F3-B4 range I'm comfortable with...

Phil Collins is also short, fat and balding. It hasn't stopped him from producing greatness. And to those who spent this time, emoting so fiercely about Elton John's sexuality. Does your preoccupation with this issue prevent you from enjoying his music? If not, then be kinder, as the Lord we serve wants us to be. Or neither of you will wind up where you wish to go.
