One of favorite Elliott Smith songs. And that's saying a lot. There are so many great to choose from.

Why the need to know the 'meaning'?Why not just interpret it for yourself and take out whatever you need. It's a wonderful wonderful song. Don't cheapen it by having it have to be about a definitive something.(some of) you people! tsk.

I think the wondering should be a testement to the song. Never admonish people for attempting to interpret a piece of art, just because you don't like the interpretation. Wanting to know more is a good thing. Personally I think it has multiple meanings and the song in fact has multiple narrators.

Is this tune really about drugs or is it about the man's mind while he may or may not have been contemplating ending his life Either way we lost a great one. Why did he turn to artificial stimulants anyway? Nobody knows. I appreciate the tune for the musical value. I simply wish Elliot was here to hear that-out

poor man, I couldn't imagine being addicted to heroin, but at least he had a forum to expose his need for help. I loved his contribution to music. rip ellliot

This song is incredible. I cannot relate to the meaning of the song as I have never endeavored to experiment with class A drugs but I can understand the struggles Elliott had. The melody and soothing lyrics make it a classic.

Some of these comments are as erroneous something like "Lucy in the sky with Diamonds". Well, they were convinced that the song was about LSD. Wrong. It was inspired by some artwork Julien Lennon had brought home. Isn't it enought that this is one if Elliott's most beautiful, delicate, ethereal songs?

this song is absolutely referencing heroin use. that, and the the level of distrust a user instills in those who love them. as all of elliott's music was deeply personal, it isn't surprising that junk tends to show up a lot in it.

i agree, Elliott dabbled with drugs since he was an early teenager.

Oh, btw, I do concur that the song screams out the withdrawal from the world that particularly accompanies a heroin or opoide addiction. The song is so full of subtle references to "going away" disappearing, etcetera that the song, at least on that level, would most likely be a heroin-like addictive song...As you probably know, the thing is that Elliott was into drugs..,what he was into at A vs. B is ??? I thought Amphetamines+Boos were staples, but there was truth to his "love=addiction=drugs

I definitely would agree with the majority of what you said there, besides splitting hairs on how exactly heroin is so much more destructive than cocaine...Both are pretty much one way streets to personal ruin. BUT, while I agree that the tone of the song is "peaceful," their doesn't appear to be anything transcendent nor peaceful about the narrative within the song. Whatever the specifics may be, it seems clear to me that either he/his "someone" is consumed by a drug & given up on their life
