Climbing to the Moon draws upon E's experiences visiting his sister at a mental-health facility shortly before her death.

Lyrics:

So I wrote it all in a letter

But I don't know if it came

The nurse she likes my writing

So she keeps it just like me

So that it won't get away

I won't be denied this time

'fore I go out of my mind over matters

Got my foot on the ladder

And I'm climbing up to the moon

Got a sky that looks like heaven

Got an earth that looks like shit

And it's getting hard to tell where

What I am ends

And what they're making me begins

I won't be denied this time

'fore I go out of my mind over matters

Got my foot on the ladder

And I'm climbing up to the moon

Saturday in the yard

They'll bring you by

We'll lay down on the grass

And watch as the sky closes in

I won't be denied this time

'fore I go out of my mind over matters

Got my foot on the ladder

And I'm climbing up to the moon

A very dear friend of mine posted this song on Facebook that night he took his life. When I miss him, I always listen to this.

The opening chords are identical to Brandi Carlisle's "Turpentine".

Very true. I've read his book as well. It was such a good read. While Mark has gone through several terrible losses in his life, he still approaches life with humour and grace. I think he's the only man in the world who would write a kooky little song like 'I Like Birds' as a tribute to his late mother.

During my troubled teens I'd sing this song to myself in the psych ward. Now I make a healthy living, am looking to get married soon and expecting to start a family soon. I wonder if I'd make it here without such a beautiful album to help guide me.

It's about his sister indeed. I'm almost done reading his book and he says that almost all the songs in it are written as if Liz made them, from her point of view. The book is so fucking sad and moving, but I don't know how E does it: you still feel better after reading his words, or listening to his songs

I actually think it's about his sister Elizabeth who struggled with mental illness and committed suicide. It sounds a lot like an unstable person in a hospital and trying to break free. "The nurse she likes my writing so she keeps it just like me so that it won't get away" "I won't be denied this time before I go out of my mind" "It's getting hard to tell where what I am ends and what they're making me begins..." Either way, it's a fantastic song. One of E's best in my opinion.

It's about his Mum I think. She died of cancer. There are sad tales about E but the man definitely made my life better. God Bless you Mark.
