I think he means that they allow you to play faster and sound more consistent with less work for the drummer. They do not pull the sound out of the drums, they act more like an electric kit and output a sample once 'triggered'.

Nothing stupid here. The trigger allows the drummer to play faster because he doesn't have to focus on the regularity of his hits.
