I remember driving across Connecticut in the spring and coming to this amazing bridge across a wide ravine with flowering trees all around me. Right as we were getting to the part of the bridge where we felt like we were flying across the ravine, this song hit 2:13. I will remember that for the rest of my life. Thank you, Mr. Fogelberg.

Here is what Dan said in an interview back in the day: "What are you feeling about the title track, "Netherlands"?The song, "Netherlands", I think was one of the most adventurous things I've ever written. I couldn't find anyplace else on the album to put it. There's just no other place for that to go. I couldn't lose it on a side. It's too important a song. So the only place to do is to lead it off. It also sets up the major crux of the album philosophically which is the two forks of existence, acceptance or denial. It comes down, that's the only choice we have when you think about it. Any other choice we have is contingent on the basic: either accept the life you're given or deny it and commit suicide. It's either one. You've got to make that decision every day.

This song has touched my soul like none other. I was stationed at Parris Island feeling homesick when a great guy who worked at the Naval Hospital there turned me on to this album (thanks Gary). Now 36 years later and it still grasps something deep within me that no other song has ever done which I find remarkable because I love a lot of different genres of music. I miss you desperately Dan. Thank you for your incredible gifts.

I first heard this album at my girlfriend's place in the early 80's. She said check out this new one by Dan Fogelberg, I thought all his songs were pretty much AM easy listening fluff but when I heard this it blew me away!!! It took you to a place powerful and majestic at once and the next gentle and melodic. He put so much passion and inspiration in everything he did and it just had a way of rubbing off on you.Thanks Dan for all your music, loud and soft. It has made me a better man for it....
