More like "subliminal involuntary plagiarism" by Michael Mac. Not intentional, just something that happens as a writer. Writers/authors/musicians are inspired to write by anything around them, at anytime, & anywhere -- A distinctive sound (think of the shoe-shine scene from "Walk The Line"), someone speaking a certain phrase a certain way (Otis Redding's "Respect"), somebody telling a story, overhearing a brief snippet of a guitar or bass riff, maybe even remembering someone singing a line from a relatively obscure song (by Leiber/Stoller standards)....That's prolly what happened in Michael Mac's case. I honestly don't believe he deliberately sat down, listened to this record, & then decided to write his smash hit -- I think he just picked up the melody of that first line somewhere in life, it came to him & he based his song around it. He most likely heard someone sing that first line at some point in his past -- maybe one of the other Doobies was a Chuck Jackson fan.

On this day in 1962 {August 26th} "I Keep Forgettin'" " by the Chuck Jackson entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 at position #95; and on September 16th, 1962 it peaked at #55 {for 1 week} and spent 7 weeks on the Top 100...Between 1961 and 1968 he had eighteen Top 100 records; with "Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)" being his biggest hit, it peaked at #23 {for 2 weeks} on June 17th, 1962 {it reached #2 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart}...He made the Top 100 chart five more times in duets with Maxine Brown...Personally, his debut record, “I Don’t Want To Cry”, it my favorite...Mr. Jackson celebrated his 77th birthday just over a month ago on July 22nd {2014}...

This song is different than the Michael McDonald song that uses a similar title... This one was written by Leiber and Stoller... eventually Leiber and Stoller received a song writing credit for the McDonald one, but just because they are similar lyrically... They are completely different songs musically...

Interesting. don't know the mono version. It's the wide stereo seperation of the percussion that makes this for me.

It was arranged by Teacho Wiltshire. The cool stereo mix, though, is missing 50% of the sleigh bells and other percussion, which is clearly heard on the mono mix. This is certainly one of the strangest and least commercial R&B singles ever released....and I love it.
