Congratulations to Chuck Berry - nearly 88 years young and getting a major award like the Polar Music Prize is fantastic. I saw him in 1964 in Bournemouth, England, with a bunch of my mates from school, together with The Animals and other bands of the time. Chuck came out and headlined for the whole of the second half. Soon after he started, loads of kids rushed down to the front of the stage and I was just a few feet from him, rocking the whole place, strutting his stuff, wielding his Gibson guitar like it was part of his body and whipping up the crowd. Bouncers were going crazy trying to keep people off the stage. Chuck just blew everybody away, you could not sit down when he played, simple as that. Been a lifelong fan ever since, a true turning point in my life.

Announcement from Polar Music PrizeChuck Berry, one of this year’s two Polar Music Prize Laureates, will unfortunately not be able to attend the ceremony in Stockholm Tuesday 26 August.- Chuck Berry has been struggling with his health for a while. We have been given notice that he must not travel, and therefore he will not be able to come to Stockholm. Of course this is sad news to us, however our thoughts first and foremost go to Chuck Berry and his family, and we hope he will make a quick recovery, says Marie Ledin, MD of the Polar Music Prize.Chuck Berry, 88, has toured all of his life, and even this year he has given several concerts. His impact on Rock ‘n’ Roll music cannot be emphasised enough and that is also the reason he has been awarded the Polar Music Prize.- The prize ceremony will in many ways be a magnificent tribute to Chuck Berry and his music. We are very proud that he is one of the Laureates this year. Although he will not be present in person, he will be with us in spirit, says Marie Ledin.The Laureate Opera Director Peter Sellars, will attend the ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall 26 August as planned.
