The staging of this is exquisite: Fred Astaire's serenade of this Irving Berlin classic continues along as he and Ginger Rogers gradually, seamlessly, dance away from the rest of the public and onto their own private venetian dance floor. Then they sort of circle around each other for a few beats (checking each other out), perform a couple of dreamy back bends, and finally at 2:33, Rogers does a spin away from Astaire, his hand catches hers, and they fly away in an exquisite duet, further enhanced by a satin-and-ostrich feather evening gown (actually ice blue) that Rogers not only wore beautifully, but I understand indirectly co-designed with the film's costume designer Bernard Newman. And, seriously, who else could make a bareback so sexy?
