From the cd Ghosts Of The Great Highway

Sorry that

I could never love you back

I could never care enough

In these last days

Her tears fell

On her pages found me out

About her words I don't know what

To do or say

Wading through

Warm canals and pools, clear blue

The Tuscarawas flows into

The Great Lake

Riding back

To where the highway met

Dead-end tracks

The ground is now cement and glass

And far away

Heal her soul

Carry her, my angel

Ohio

Green, green youth

What about the sweetness we knew?

What about what's good, what's true

From those days

Can't count to

All the lovers I've burned through

So why do I still burn for you

I can't say

Sorry that

I could never love you back

I could never care enough

In these last days

Heal her soul

Carry her, my angel

Ohio

Children blessed

Gather round the home, she rests

So poor and cold

With their Midwest

Moon and sun

Flashes bringin' on

My open eyes to lightning storms

The touch of mist felt soft, felt warm

On my face

Graving dreams

A million miles ago

You seem

The star that I just

Don't see

Anymore

Words long gone

Lost on journeys we walked on

Lost her voice is heard along the way

Sorry for

Never going by your door

Never feeling love like that

Anymore

Heal her soul

Carry her, my angel

Ohio

This is what a song should be. It is EVERYTHING a song should be and nothing extra, no embellishment, no superficial styling, or glitter, just a study in how we deal with hurt. It reminds me in its tone and substance (not its style) of Townes Van Zandt's "Waitin' around to Die" or "Lungs" in that it is an unflinchingly blunt journey through the hopeless depths of the human condition. Mistakes are made, loves lost, life wasted, we turn our heads away and pretend there is something else, or we look down the barrel of the gun and find the beauty that lives inside the pain and want. Van Zandt did the latter, and so does Kozelek, at least in this moment.

I don't know how I got here from national politics... but so moved to read how many people are experiencing so many and varied positive, thoughtful, emotional, and spiritual reactions to this music. What I think of it isn't the point (but sure, it's sweet).. Finally reading "positive stuff" from this North American continent is positive and pleasing for me! Go, listeners! Go, Sun Kil Moon! Bye, guys - - -

Fell in Love with this song the minute I heard it in the movie "Shopgirl." The song is perfectly placed in the film when Mirabelle comes to New York City for the black tie dinner after being in Vermont with her parents. Mirabelle had decided she could not go to the dinner after Steve Martin's character confessed to sleeping with another woman in a letter. The song is used in their "make - up" scenes after the cheating episode. So perfect because Mirabelle the young and innocent, Martin the gray -haired experienced man-about-town. The tone of the song brings the unspoken emotions of each character to the viewer without reservation.

I used to play this as a cover on my guitar n front of my mexican friends, from MX. They all murmer'd the words in broken english. This song reminds me of an old best friend Ricardo. As I move again away and to something distant from him, I wish him to be carried on back to his home. Viva Mexico, pinche Ricardo

Mark Kozelek is one of the few things still good about American music.

First time I heard this played live it brought tears to my eyes, I was sitting in the front and Mark noticed, the way he looked when he sang "Heal her soul etc" I will never forget the look in his eyes.....

I grew up in Ohio, but moved away when I was 12. The memories are... special and this song brings them flooding back. Love this song. Miss the tall trees, soft rain, green grass and best friends.

Wonderful song. It just gives you such a great environment when you really listen to it. Mark is such an architect.
