According to the Beef, the words are about human evolution, which Van Vliet seemed to feel took place on the Indian subcontinent – not Eastern Africa, just ignoring or not familiar with L.S.B. Leakey or their discoveries at Olduvai Gorge.“Babbette Baboon” is an ape-like creature on the brink of “comin’ over pretty soon” to a more humanoid existence – if she can survive being eaten by a tiger or choked to death by smoke and volcanic ash (tabbaco sky), or caught by a mysterious stalker. The original lyrics went on for pages, but the Beef whittled them down to just a few lines and repeated phrases. But occasionally, the POV shifts to her fellow proto-human stalker (who can’t lose, with the stuff he uses – namely, tools), who eventually catches Babette, they copulate (go-zoom!), and go off for a walk in the sun (two shadows at noon) – a kind of furry Adam and Eve, the parents of the human race. Van Vliet, a man for the ages.

Beefheart's the man and Ry Cooder makes everything he plays on better.

Incredibly Good!My creatively prohibitive work day is made bearable..tolerable (scientists pontificating/blabbering in foreground) by this tune..Thanks Capt Beefheart for providing my sanity a raft with which to float over their oceanic ignorance with!

Captain Beefheart - Abba ZabaFrom "Safe as Milk" the début album by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, originally released in 1967. The album is also notable for the involvement of a 20-year-old Ry Cooder, who played guitar and wrote some of the arrangements. The record did not achieve popular success on its release, but I always liked it. The Captain was one of a kind.
