A f...ing MASTERPIECE! One of the key threads that ties all the scenes together is the parallel reality of the cabaret show and the world outside which is quickly being nazified. Thus, each scene in the cabaret is played out , echoed in a way, in the real world outside. Hence, "Two Ladies" is simply a comment on the love&sex triangle involving Sally (Liza Minelli), Brian (Michael York) and Maximilian (Helmut Griem), the German aristocrat who has sex with both. Without this juxtaposition the movie seems almost plot-less. Back in the 1970s, I remember, I was discussing the movie with a number of friends and acquaintances, and only a small % of them got this parallelism! Amazing, since it is the very backbone of the movie.
